DayStart Privacy Policy
DayStart is an Android alarm clock app. Its core purpose is to schedule wake-up alarms, present wake challenges, and help you stay awake after the alarm. This policy explains what the app accesses on your device and how that information is handled.
1. Summary
- DayStart works entirely on your device.
- We do not operate accounts, analytics SDKs, ad networks, or cloud backends for this app.
- Alarm settings and session state are stored locally on the phone.
- Camera photos used for the Wake Gate bathroom challenge are processed on-device with Google ML Kit and are never uploaded.
2. Data the app stores on your device
DayStart stores locally (using Android SharedPreferences and temporary files):
- Alarm times, names, repeat rules, sound choices, and wake-mode settings
- Whether an alarm is enabled
- Current wake / Relapse Guard session state
- Temporary photo files used only for on-device challenge verification
This data stays on your device unless you back up your phone with your own backup tools.
3. Permissions and why they are requested
- Exact alarms — required so wake-up alarms fire at the scheduled time. DayStart is an alarm/clock app.
- Notifications & full-screen intent — to show the alarm and wake UI even when the phone is locked or another app is open.
- Foreground service (media playback) — to play the alarm tone reliably while a wake session is active.
- Vibrate / modify audio / Do Not Disturb access — so the alarm can be heard and felt as configured.
- Boot completed — to reschedule alarms after reboot or app update.
- Battery optimization exemption (optional, user-approved) — Android may delay or kill background work. Allowing unrestricted battery helps alarms and Relapse Guard remain reliable. You can decline; the app still works, but delivery may be less reliable on some devices.
- Camera — only for optional Wake Gate photo challenges (for example verifying a bathroom/toilet scene). Photos are analyzed on-device and are not sent to us or any server.
- Activity recognition / physical activity — used for movement-based wake challenges so the app can tell that you got out of bed / stayed active. This stays on-device.
4. Photos and on-device processing
If you use a camera challenge, DayStart may capture a photo and run on-device image labeling (Google ML Kit) to check whether the scene matches the challenge (for example bathroom-related labels). The model runs locally. Photos are not uploaded, not shared, and not used for advertising. Temporary image files may be created for verification and can be deleted by the app or cleared when you remove app data.
5. Data we do not collect
- No account registration
- No email, name, or contact list collection
- No location tracking for advertising
- No sale of personal data
- No third-party advertising SDKs in the app
6. Children
DayStart is a general-audience alarm utility. It is not directed at children under 13. Do not use the camera challenges to photograph other people without their permission.
7. Your choices
- You can deny Camera or Activity permissions; related challenges will not work until granted.
- You can keep battery optimization enabled; alarm reliability may vary by manufacturer.
- You can clear app storage or uninstall DayStart to remove local data.
8. Changes
If this policy changes in a material way, we will update the “Last updated” date on this page and, when required, note the change in the Play Store listing.
